For many years, I have been supporting and volunteering to the Cen-Tex Humane Society, Second Chance Animal Shelter here in Killeen, TX. Why? They need all the help and since they operate on a daily base only from funds through membership and donations. It's quite a challenge, to make ends meet from month to month.

Since we are located near Fort Hood, this shelter took many animals in from soldiers and their families that were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. NO soldiers were ever turned away, even though we were wondering, how we can support that all. With good shelter support in donation and volunteers, we survived.

In the early morning of 1 November 2009, tragedy struck the shelter with a fire, where we lost over 110 animals, mostly through smoke inhalation. The main structure of the shelter was still intact, but over 75% of the inside was completely destroyed.

With community support, the shelter started to rebuild with monitory donations and insurance money. Since the shelter was annexed within the city limits, the rebuilding had to be done by city ordnance codes and their standards and therefore funds lasted only so far. Lots of fundraising events took place and are still ongoing.

A partial reopening of the shelter took place on 3 April 2010, but still needs a lot more work.

On 7 April 2010, the Cen-Tex Modelers had their monthly meeting, when I was given the floor to give a presentation on behalf of the animal shelter. I presented all the above and more to the membership. As it turned out, we had quit a large number of members present, who had not only one, but several had more than 2 animals at their home.  I myself have a rescue dog from this shelter for the past 8 years

A motion was made on the floor, that the club donate $400.00 to the shelter, which was approved by a unanimous vote. Before I could tell the shelter president of the good news, our club president Lynn Kelch called me the next morning and informed me, that he and his wife will also make a personal donation matching the amount of the club.

Those donations were very much appreciated and will help to continue to the rebuild and care of the animals.

  Thank you very much
